Does Hand Sanitizer Expire Over Time?

Hand sanitizer has now become a staple for homes, workplaces, cars and purses everywhere. It’s an awesome way to help keep you and yours safe because it prevents the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses when you’re on the go.

Something we get asked a lot is ‘does hand sanitizer expire?’. It does expire eventually. Hand sanitizer has a shelf life and its expiry date should be clearly marked on the bottle. If you’re using expired hand sanitizer, you could be compromising your health and safety.

In today’s blog, we’re going to be looking at why hand sanitizer has an expiry date, if expired hand sanitizer works and what makes a great hand sanitizer.

Why does hand sanitizer expire?

The reason why hand sanitizer expires is because the alcohol content dissolves. The FDA (which regulates hand sanitizers) requires hand sanitizers to have an alcohol content of 60% or more.

As time passes, the alcohol levels decrease and will eventually drop to below 60%. The longer you leave a hand sanitizer, the more the alcohol content will drop. This won’t happen quickly, it will happen over a period of years.

If you haven’t used your hand sanitizer and the bottle is closed, the slower the alcohol content will dissolve. If you have an opened bottle of hand sanitizer, the alcohol content will decrease faster.

Does expired hand sanitizer work?

It can do so if it's only recently expired, but it’s not worth the risk to your health. When a sanitizer reaches less than 60% alcohol, it’s simply less effective at killing germs.

Like we mentioned before, the alcohol content of a sanitizer dissolves slowly over time. But we don’t recommend using hand sanitizer that's passed its expiration date at all.

What makes a good hand sanitizer?

When you’re choosing a hand sanitizer, there are a few things you should be looking out for to make sure you have the best possible experience.

Firstly, your hand sanitizer should contain at least 60% alcohol. Secondly, it should be able to kill 99.9% of harmful bacteria.

A quality hand sanitizer shouldn’t have a strong smell of alcohol and it shouldn’t make your skin feel dry or leave a sticky, uncomfortable residue on your hands.
